Mykonos (Greek Island)

It's one of the inivitable consequences of travelling to all these incredible places that you won't be alone in doing so. You can view this as a percentage, with the original attraction of the destination as one number, and the extent to which tourism has eroded or replaced the original attraction with another.

A nearly untouched and spectacular place like Folegandros would be 95% intact, and 5% tourist.

Mykonos isn't nearly so lucky, in fact, nearly opposite of that. Probably the first place we've been ready to leave a bit early. Most people are here to chase some tail, get wrecked and maybe do some cocaine along the way. We can tell the orginal town would have been gorgeous at one point, but 40 years of heavy clubbing tourism have left it a bit of husk.

Still, after our two day ferry ordeal we arrived at 2:30 in the morning and were greeted by perhaps the friendliest Greek man we've met so far. He owns the hotel we had reccomended to us, and showed us that the Greek people of the town have managed to hang on to their famous sense of hospitality despite everything going on around them. Our hotel was fantastic, and situated besides the windmills which made Mykonos famous.

We tried to visit the Island of Delos, which is a spectacular archeological site a short boat ride away. unfortunately, the metlemi continues, and all rides were cancelled. To make up for it, we bought a large bottle of ouzo and some local treats/bread at the almost medieval bakery here.

Somehow these cars have survived on an island of salt spray and sun, probably thanks to some car fanatic we were reminded of (Dwayne!).

Once six separate chuches, someone decided a while ago to turn them into a single large one. A bit homely, but full of character. Sort of like Brad (haha..)

So while Mykonos itself might have been a little palid and worse for wear than we were expecting, we were able to see (largely) beautiful Santorini on the way here, and do a fair bit of VERY interesting people watching. Alcohol and a town designed to confuse invading pirates make for some hilarious bits of rambling done by groups of people desparate to find a certain disco or bar.

Andros is up next, and our last stop in Greece before heading out to Norway. We are very excited about it, as it is a much quieter island popular with the Greek people for it's beautiful towns and deserted beaches. We'll be renting a car (smart car if we can swing it!) to scoot around and see as much as we can.

So...you bought a LARGE bottle of Ouzo...I'm assuming to drink...how much of it did were you able to polish off and do you think that might have added to the hilarity of watching (other?) drunks stumbling around Mykonos? Here you thought the Metlemi, making those windmills whir, was responsible for that pounding sound in your head - ha!

One more stop before Norway. (Hard to believe!) Have a wonderful time and update soon.

P.S. Folegandros looked so beautiful. I couldn't help but wonder if maybe the burro would have been a better rental than the moped...
